Gypsum plasterboard is often used for interior finishing and creating decorative elements. With the help of gypsum board, you can not only level the walls, but also transform almost any interior. The only drawback of the material is insufficient strength. Dents, holes, cracks on the plasterboard surface can appear accidentally. To fix a hole in the drywall is not difficult, there are several proven ways to do this.
Using Putty
A small crack or through hole with a size of 1 to 3 cm is eliminated with the help of gypsum putty. Such repairs will not require calling a master.
First, it is necessary to prepare tools and material:
- Construction trowel.
- Sandpaper.
- Self-adhesive construction film.
- Gypsum putty in a sealed package.
Ready-to-use composition looks like a homogeneous cream. It is easy to caulk the walls, the ceiling. Excellent adhesion even to the painted surface without pre-treatment with a special solution.
Caulking holes with putty is performed in the following sequence
- Clean the area around the defect with sandpaper or sanding mesh. This is necessary to make the contours of the hole more even and get rid of fragments that have delaminated.
- Level the area. To do this, go over the repaired surface with a trowel. Clean it from dust.
- Glue a small piece of netting on the hole. It should protrude a little beyond the contours of the defect.
- Apply the working mortar. To do this, use a narrow construction trowel. If you do not have such a tool, a piece of hard plastic will do. For example, you can use an old plastic bank card.
- Let the putty dry. The setting time depends on the brand of the mixture, the thickness of the layer and the volume of the hole. On average it takes 4-5 hours.
- Apply the second layer of putty. This stage can be skipped if the defect is minor – up to 1 cm in width and length. To eliminate larger holes, you may need a third coat.
- Wait for all layers to dry. Remove the excess putty with a spatula or fine-grained sandpaper. The second option is better, because you can remove too much material with a spatula.
After the damaged area of the wall in the house has been repaired, you can begin priming and painting or wallpapering. If several defects have been repaired on the drywall sheet at the same time, it makes sense to completely repaint this wall.
In the case of using putty can be a situation where, after applying the second layer, the first gives the shrinkage and so on. This happens when the drywall was installed on the profile without a backing of soundproofing material or insulation, such as Styrofoam.
Then a significant gap is formed between the wall and the board, where the mortar will “fall through”. In this case it is necessary to reinforce the back wall. If you contact the home renovation service, you will not have problems with the repair of the walls.
This is done in the following way
- We make a marking on the wall.
- Shape the hole. To do this, we create an opening in the form of a square or rectangle. We cut a piece of plywood (wood), which will be larger than the opening by 5-6 cm. Let’s check if it will pass the hole diagonally. Screw a self-tapping screw into the plywood, so that you can hold on to it. The screw will serve as a kind of handle to hold the base.
- Put the plywood behind the panel. Install so that the piece covers the entire hole.
- Fix the base with self-tapping screws. Remove the screw that was in the middle. Clean the opening from dirt and dust, and prime it.
- Apply a thin layer of putty.
- Lay the reinforcing mesh.
- Apply the second layer of filler.
- Level the surface with a wide putty knife.
Fix the defect with acrylic sealant
This method is effective only for small damages – up to 5 mm. It is used to cover the holes that are left by self-tapping screws, nails, dowels and so on.
Acrylic sealant is designed to seal joints, seams and cracks. It perfectly adheres to drywall. The technology of application is simple – you just need to pour the sealant into the hole. The composition does not harden for a long time, so it will not be difficult to remove the excess with a spatula.
After drying, the surface should be made even and smooth for a nice look of the completed repair in the house. Process it with sandpaper or mesh. The glue may give a little shrinkage. It should not be added to the hole. Finish the repair by applying plaster.
Gypsum plasterboard sheets are often used indoors. Due to the increased brittleness, various flaws can form on them. To eliminate defects is not difficult. To do this, a person must have a basic set of knowledge in the field of construction. The technology of repair will depend on the size of the defect.
